Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew then wrong-footed the Mali defence before slotting home at the near post, after a clever back-flick from Gyan. Mali were unlucky not to score earlier through Cheick Diabate’s free-kick, which struck the Ghana woodwork twice.

The match was a cagey affair in the first-half between two experienced Nations Cup sides. Both teams also picked up a number of yellow cards, with the young Ghana defensive centre-half pairing of John Boye and Jonathan Mensah living dangerously.

Mensah was in the side in place of his namesake, captain John Mensah, who was suspended after picking up a red card in Ghana’s 1-0 win over Botswana.

And the 21-year-old Mensah was lucky to only see yellow for a thumping challenge on Diabate, who stepped up for the resulting free-kick himself, only to see his chipped shot hit both posts after beating Kwaresey.

Abdou Traore was then unable to convert the follow-up. Ghana increased their intensity in the second-half and got the break-through, with Asamoah Gyan opening his 2012 Nations Cup account in some style.

The Al-Ain striker curled in a free-kick from just outside the area to Diakite’s left, with the pace and curl on the ball leaving the Mali keeper rooted to the spot. Mali responded by taking off Cheick Diabate and sending on Garra Dembele, and should have equalised immediately through striker Modibo Maiga.

Kwarasey, who looked uncomfortable in the Ghana goal all night, ended up stranded after coming for a corner and opened the goal up for Maiga to head home, but the striker could only nod it just over.

That missed opened the door for Ghana to hit back and double their lead, which they duly did through BBC African Footballer of the Year Ayew.

Gyan back-flicked deftly into the midfielder’s path, before the Marseille man did the rest himself, wrong-footing the Malian defence, before switching feet skilfully and firing home with his left at the near post.

The second goal effectively killed off the tie, as Mali had no response and paved Ghana’s path through to the last eight, where they join fellow pre-tournament favourites Ivory Coast

The result means the Equatorial Guinea squad will receive one million dollars from President Obiang Nguema’s son. The National Lightning thought they had scored early on only for Ivan Bolado’s shot to be ruled out for offside.

We played a good match. We hadn’t trained a lot together but nevertheless we still won. The team made the most of the tactics. Despite the win, we were still short in some areas and we have to work on that

Gilson Paulo Equatorial Guinea coach

In an extraordinary sequence of events in the 16th minute, the co-hosts had the ball in the Libyan net on two occasions in the space of a few seconds only to not be awarded a goal.

After captain Juvenal’s deflected shot came back off the post, goalkeeper Samir Aboud made a meal of Ivan Bolado’s effort as the Libya captain let the ball squirm under his body and over the line.

Officials ruled out the strike for offside however after Thierry Fidjeu was adjudged to be interfering with play – with the drama magnified by the net bulging as a scrambled clearance rebounded into the net.

Libya, who qualified for the finals against the odds, forced Confederation of African Football officials to remove the old Muammar Gaddafi-associated flag from its tournament website ahead of a match which they started strongly.

However, they allowed the co-hosts to take control in the middle period of the first half as Randy, Juvenal Edjogo and Balboa impressed on the counter-attack, even if one of the best chances came from a corner as Fousseny Kamisoko headed wide.

At the other end, Libya were struggling to create any clear-cut chances – with Ahmed Zuway toiling alone up front despite some bright play from midfielder Walid El Khatroushi, who fought for the rebels during the anti-Gaddafi revolution.

Nothing is decided as far as qualifying for the next round is concerned. This is not the end of our story

Marcos Paqueta Libya coach

In the second period, Equatorial Guinea – who were playing their first competitive match under a coach who took charge just 18 days ago – were again slow to make any impression on the half.

But Balboa’s effort midway through the first half was well-blocked by Abdulaziz Berrish before central defender Laurence Doe stung the palms of Aboud with a thunderous 30-yard free-kick. With Libya restricted to half-chances, the finals’ opening game looked set to end in a lacklustre draw until substitute Daniel-Bladimiar Ekedo played in Balboa just a minute after a coming on.

Steadying himself on the edge of the box with his first touch, Balboa – who played a handful of games for Madrid in 2007 – advanced on Aboud before opening his body to curl into the top corner.

The late strike sparked the game into life as Danilo smartly tipped a fierce drive from Libyan midfielder Djamal around the corner, only for the co-hosts to instantly break free at the other end.

Narcisse Ekanga must have thought he had won the game as he crashed a curling 20-yard shot against the crossbar with the outside of his right foot, but to the delight of a packed house the co-hosts did not have to wait long for the final whistle.

Saturday’s victory was a bittersweet event as regular captain Rodolfo Bodipo, who came on as a late substitute, was stretchered off with an injury – but that will be an idle thought for many Equatoguineans as the country celebrates its Nations Cup debut with a famous win.

Many of us are still digesting whole floors of gingerbread houses, and jeans that fit comfortably in October are now a denim humiliation.

Sweating is a good way to begin 2012. Exercise, like dark chocolate and office meetings that suddenly get canceled, is a proven pathway to nirvana. But if you’re going to join a gym—or returning to the gym after a long hibernation—consider the following:

1. A gym is not designed to make you feel instantly better about yourself. If a gym wanted to make you feel instantly better about yourself, it would be a bar.

2. Give yourself a goal. Maybe you want to lose 10 pounds. Maybe you want to quarterback the New York Jets into the playoffs. But be warned: Losing 10 pounds is hard.

3. Develop a gym routine. Try to go at least three times a week. Do a mix of strength training and cardiovascular conditioning. After the third week, stop carrying around that satchel of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.

4. No one in the history of gyms has ever lost a pound while reading “The New Yorker” and slowly pedaling a recumbent bicycle. No one.

5. Bring your iPod. Don’t borrow the disgusting gym headphones, or use the sad plastic radio attachment on the treadmill, which always sounds like it’s playing Kenny Loggins from a sewer.

6. Don’t fall for gimmicks. The only tried-and-true method to lose 10 pounds in 48 hours is food poisoning.

7. Yes, every gym has an overenthusiastic spinning instructor who hasn’t bought a record since “Walking on Sunshine.”

8. There’s also the Strange Guy Who is Always at the Gym. Just when you think he isn’t here today…there he is, lurking by the barbells.

9. “Great job!” is trainer-speak for “It’s not polite for me to laugh at you.”

10. Beware a hip gym with a Wilco step class.

11. Gyms have two types of members: Members who wipe down the machines after using them, and the worst people in the universe.

12. Nope, that’s not a “recovery energy bar with antioxidant dark chocolate.” That’s a chocolate bar.

13. Avoid Unsolicited Advice Guy, who, for the small fee of boring you to death, will explain the proper method for any exercise in 45 minutes or longer.

14. You can take 10 Minute Abs, 20 Minute Abs, and 30 Minute Abs. There is also Stop Eating Pizza and Eating Sheet Cake Abs—but that’s super tough!

15. If you’re motivated to buy an expensive home exercise machine, consider a “wooden coat rack.” It costs $40, uses no electricity and does the exact same thing.

16. There’s the yoga instructor everyone loves, and the yoga instructor everyone hates. Memorize who they are.

17. If you see an indoor rock climbing wall, you’re either in a really cool gym or a romantic comedy starring Kate Hudson.

18. Be cautious about any class with the words “sunrise,” “hell,” or “Moby.”

19. If a gym class is going to be effective, it’s hard. If you’re relaxed and enjoying yourself, you’re at brunch.

20. If you need to bring your children, just let them loose in the silent meditation class. Nobody minds, and kids love candles.

21. Don’t buy $150 sneakers, $100 yoga pants, and $4 water. Muscle shirts are for people with muscles, and rhythm guitarists.

22. Fancy gyms can be seductive, but once you get past the modern couches and fresh flowers and the water with lemon slices, you’re basically paying for a boutique hotel with B.O.

23. Everyone sees you secretly racing the old people in the pool.

24. If you’re at the point where you’ve bought biking shoes for the spinning class, you may as well go ahead and buy an actual bike. It’s way more fun and it doesn’t make you listen to C+C Music Factory.

25. Fact: Thinking about going to the gym burns between 0 and 0 calories.

26. A successful gym membership is like a marriage: If it’s good, you show up committed and ready for hard work. If it’s not good, you show up in sweatpants and watch a lot of bad TV.

27. There is no secret. Exercise and lay off the fries. The end.

Dear Cable:

Before I say anything else: It’s not you. It’s me.
I’ve changed over the years. I’m hardly at home. And when I am, it’s not live television I’m watching. It’s stuff that’s been queued up on my DVR for weeks. But mostly, when I’m on my couch with a remote in my hand, I’ve been…streaming. I know how wrong that must sound. But everyone’s getting their shows and movies through the Internet these days. I’m sorry. It’s just the reality of things.

I’m quitting you, cable. This will go easier if we can just admit it: We’re not right for each other anymore. I’m cutting the cord, getting rid of that white coaxial cable of yours and that clunky, dusty set-top box it’s connected to. This antenna, laptop and Roku box are moving into the living room with me because, well, they’re cheaper and slicker than you are—inside and out.

You can’t be surprised. The writing’s been on the wall since Netflix started streaming and iTunes began selling movies and LOLcats were LOLcatting on YouTube. You could even blame it on the DVR if you wanted to.

Don’t be sad. We’ve had a really good run. A crazy, devoted relationship that’s lasted decades. I’ve known you longer than my computer. My mobile phone. And all of my Nintendos.

Every time I moved, it was you I thought of first. Sure, there was electricity, but I needed electricity because I needed you. Even water—the essence of life!—was an afterthought. I could shower at the gym. I could get a jug of Poland Spring at the bodega. But there wasn’t any other way I could watch “The Sopranos” on Sunday.

Must-Stream TV

The games of just about every major sport are available through streaming.

This year’s Super Bowl will be streamed over the Internet for the first time.

Sales of Roku’s popular streaming boxes were up 300% in 2011.

It’s not rocket science: If you know how to use a DVD player, you can get Internet content on your television.

It hurts me as I write this, because I liked you. A lot. I really did. We were childhood buds. Teenage pals. I even brought you to college with me. From Nickelodeon to MTV to ESPN to HBO. My pop-cultural development, from the moment my parents let me watch television to the joint search-and-rescue efforts my wife and I hold for your 67-button remote control in our own home—how did it end up in the kitchen?—would have been lesser without you.

My life will change, I know. In the time-shifted world that is TV-over-the-Internet, I have to self-impose spoiler-avoiding blackouts from Facebook and Twitter. For as fast as things move on the Web, experiencing TV through it becomes much less of an immediate cultural experience. I’m at risk of being behind the curve at the water cooler—at least until last weekend’s “Family Guy” episode ends up on Hulu.

I know this sounds silly, but I’ll miss channel surfing. Catching the odd showing of “Ocean’s Twelve” on TBS. (You have to admit, that Capoeira laser scene is still pretty bonkers.) Stumbling upon “The Simpsons” reruns with Phil Hartman as Troy McClure. Asking myself, “Who watches local news anymore?” as I’m watching local news.

You must be thinking, “If you’re going to miss me so much, why leave? Grab a bag of Cheetos and let’s watch some ‘Frisky Dingo’!”

All Things D

Let’s be honest here. This is all selective memory. It’s the way I want to remember things. But I spent weeks before deciding to leave you watching TV pre-streaming-revolution style, just like it was 1998. Yeah, I’ve changed, but you know what? You’ve changed more.I mean, come on. How many shows about housewives are there? I like chefs, but I don’t need to see them on television 24/7. Ghost hunters? Dancing celebrities? Talent shows? “Shark Week”? Celebrity ghost-hunting talent shows during “Shark Week”? It’s too much of too little. You’re full of a lot of inescapable crap.

Don’t even bring up the “What about live sports?” argument. It’s not all pixelated highlight reels on the Internet. Local matches are available over the air with a $20 antenna. I can stream games on my PlayStation 3 through my DirecTV Sunday Ticket subscription. Even the Super Bowl—you know, one of the world’s most gigantic sporting events? It’s going to be streamed over the Internet this year.

“What about ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ huh? What about ‘Mad Men?’ ” you’re probably wondering. “You love Michael Mann—you’re going to miss ‘Luck’?” OK, so I might not be experiencing some of the most golden nuggets of television on the same day as millions of others. But you know what? That’s the way I’ve been doing things for a long time. “The Wire.” “Battlestar Galactica.” “Friday Night Lights.” That suite of shows everyone said I just had to watch? I didn’t get to them until much later. And, for the most part, I’ve been fine with that. I’ve survived.

“Don’t think you can frame the Internet as this unreliable source for premium content and dangle professional sports in front of my nose to reel me in again. I can get everything that counts over the Internet and on my TV.”

And, yes, I know there will be a new set of issues by relying on the Internet as my pipeline to television. Staring at spinning wheels and download bars as I wait for my content to load and buffer. Pixelated pictures on days when my bandwidth isn’t as robust as it should be. More typing and searching rather than leisurely channel surfing. Yeah, yeah, I get all of that. And it doesn’t bother me.

So don’t think you can frame the Internet as this unreliable, unpolished source for premium content and dangle professional sports and Emmy fodder in front of my nose to reel me in again. I can get everything that counts over the Internet and on my living-room TV.

I’ll admit it. The solution isn’t as elegant as your one-box, one-remote setup. To be able to watch the most complete array of noncable entertainment requires several services like Netflix and iTunes, an antenna and, for the nerdiest content completists, a full-fledged computer attached to your television. But it’s not as crazy and intimidating as it sounds.

How do I know? I’ve been spending quality couch time with gadgets that make the process pretty simple. I’ve rounded them up here. Don’t be jealous.

Hey, it’s not completely over. Who knows? The pathways of tech and content have been weaving in and out of each other since cave folk painted on rocks. It’s not going to stop anytime soon.

This will be good for everyone. You’ll grow. I’ll grow. The Internet will grow.

I’ve never been good at byes, so I’ll just say this: Be well.

Your pal,

Kevin

P.S. Can you cut me a deal on my Internet bill?

3 Ways to Go Cable-Free

1. WATCH LIVE TV…FREE

It’s like a dirty secret. Most of the television we watch is available free, over the air and in high definition to boot. A simple antenna will get you all of the major networks plus other regional channels. What does that equal? Most key sporting events and every network TV show.

The catch: Your reception depends on how close you are to a TV tower. Generally, roof antennae fare better than the indoor variety. To find the best outdoor antenna, go to antennaweb.org, type in your address and the site will tell you what type you’ll need. Unfortunately, finding the right indoor antenna is a trial and error process as everyone’s home is different. Get one that receives both UHF and VHF signals, be patient as you make minor adjustments to the antenna position and be sure to save your receipt.

Televisions made in the past few years have TV tuners—just plug in the antenna—but if you want a more cable-like user interface as well as a DVR, get the Channel Master CM-7400 ($400, channelmaster.com). You can browse channel lineups on a grid just as you did with your old set-top box—it gets all of the information from the Internet—and schedule recordings of your favorite shows. The box also includes access to Vudu, an on-demand movie- and TV-show streaming service.

2. GET INTO THE STREAM OF THINGS

There are several products that make it easy to access video content through the Web on your living room television without the need for a computer. For the most part, they’re all easy to use and deliver a huge, simple to browse selection of movies and TV shows through applications like Netflix, Hulu and iTunes.

To make your TV smart, all you need is an Internet connection and one of the streaming solutions shown here. But before you pony up for one of these boxes (or a brand-new TV) check your television or DVD/Blu-ray player. If it was manufactured within the last year or so and can connect to the Internet, there’s a chance it may already have access to a bunch of streaming services.

Samsung D8000 3D LED Smart TV | For clutter-haters who don’t want to deal with having any more boxes in the living room, upgrade to the D8000. It’s only 1.2 inches thick, has a gorgeous picture surrounded by a barely-there frame and Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and other services are baked right in. Finding the content you want is easy—the flip side of its remote is a full Qwerty keyboard. From $2,700, samsung.com

Apple TV | If you get most of your movies and shows from the iTunes store, this is the easiest way to shop it from your flat screen instead of your MacBook. The only other major streaming service is Netflix, but it makes up for that with access to MLB.TV, NHL Game Center, NBA.com (to watch live games on those channels, you’ll need a subscription to each) and what’s probably the most extensive collection of digital pay-for shows and movies.

If you own an iPhone or iPad, download the free Apple remote app—it’s the best option for browsing through content on both the iTunes store and Netflix. $99, apple.com

Boxee Box | It has Netflix, Vudu and MLB.TV, but where the Boxee excels is in finding free shows and movies from (legal) sources you might not have thought to look at before. All you have to do is search for the show—the remote has a full Qwerty keyboard—and if it’s on the Internet, Boxee will find it. There’s a wide variety of channels to explore as well. Later this month, you’ll be able to add a live TV tuner to the box for $49. $180, boxee.tv

Sony PlayStation 3 | Yes, it’s a gaming console. But for those who pull their hair out over sluggish, molasses-like user interfaces (I’m not sure how I’m not bald yet), the PS3 is one of the snappiest streaming solutions available.

Browsing for stuff on Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and the PlayStation’s own video store is lightning quick. It’s also one of the best Blu-ray/DVD players you can buy.
Xbox 360 Kinect | The Xbox can stream for-pay movies from the growing Zune Video Marketplace as well as content from Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go and ESPN, but what sets it apart from everything else attached to your TV are the innovative gesture commands.

You can browse through movies by swiping at them “Minority Report”-style. And voice controls—pause and play just by saying it—mean you might never have to press a button again. From $300, xbox.com

Roku LT | Roku is a pioneer in bringing streaming video to TVs. The hockey-puck-size box was developed specifically to stream Netflix but has grown to include over 500 channels including Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video.

The LT is Roku’s most affordable option and outputs video at 720p. Slightly more expensive variants get you a better picture and the option to play games like “Angry Birds” using the remote as a controller. Later this year, expect the Roku Streaming Stick, a thumb-size device that plugs into the back of your TV for a more minimal look. $50, roku.com

3. PLUG INTO THE WORLD WIDE WEB

Many televisions and streaming boxes provide some sort of rudimentary Web browser. Unfortunately a lot of sites where you would normally visit to watch videos are blocked when accessed on these devices. The work-around? Simply hook up a computer to the TV. With the right wires, you should be able to connect your laptop easily enough. But if you want a more elegant and permanent setup, consider these two gadgets.

Apple Mac Mini | Hard to believe, but this metal block that’s as thick as a stack of cocktail napkins is a full-fledged Mac. It’s designed to be unobtrusive: The fan is super quiet, it attaches to your television with a single HDMI cable—just like a DVD player, but prettier—and there’s only one power cord, so you don’t have to figure out how to hide another power brick behind your credenza. It can play everything you throw at it without any jitters or stutters and, for home-theater enthusiasts, it supports eight channels of digital audio. From $599, apple.com

Netgear PTVU1000 | Already have a PC laptop but don’t want to physically tether it to your flat screen every time you fire up an episode of “Downton Abbey”? This device from Netgear lets you wirelessly stream whatever’s on your laptop to your television in high definition. Just leave the small receiver attached to your TV, plug a small USB transmitter into your laptop and it’ll automatically start beaming your small screen to your big screen. $130, netgear.com

Economists don’t expect loads of job growth, but there could be opportunities in areas such as health care, professional services, retail and some manufacturing, says Harry Holzer, a public-policy professor at Georgetown University. Also, continuing churn in the labor market means that even in areas with few new jobs, there will still be openings when workers move around.

Technical knowledge and experience will be required for certain spots. “For professional services you usually need a professional degree. In health you usually need some training,” Mr. Holzer says. “Manufacturing needs some occupational training. Retail is different. It doesn’t require specific occupational training, but it does often require some interpersonal skills.”

In addition to the standard prerequisites, employers will be looking for workers who are able to quickly adapt to new responsibilities as companies respond to changing economic and industry trends. So workers should highlight their creative skills to differentiate themselves, says Lawrence Katz, an economist at Harvard University.

“Firms have so many job seekers per opening. They are going to want candidates with clear credentials, but also a little extra shine in interactive skills and creativity,” Mr. Katz says. “They are less willing in a weak labor market to take chances.”

Here are other skills experts recommend workers should pick up and enhance.

Technical literacy. It’s important for workers at a variety of levels to be familiar with some of the technical, if mundane, processes that keep organizations running smoothly.

Take the health-care industry. Providers are bringing on more technology when it comes to record keeping and billing.

“A knowledge of electronic data handling is just a really big plus. That goes for receptionists to the doctors who are becoming employees of larger hospital systems,” says Warren Bobrow, president of All About Performance, a Los Angeles-based skills-assessment consultancy.

Workers also need to be good users of social media. There’s a fine line between letting interested parties know about the latest news and bombarding them with too much information. Still, individuals shouldn’t be afraid to use networking sites such as LinkedIn to make employment connections.

Business acumen. As companies remain concerned about demand for their products and services, a wide variety of employees need to think about sales, experts say. Even those outside of marketing should care about revenue, and making sure customers are happy.

Mr. Bobrow has clients in Colorado, an orthopedic practice with more than a dozen doctors, and those doctors don’t become partners until client-satisfaction surveys are reviewed and good results are found.

“They are in a competitive marketplace because so much of their work is based on referrals,” Mr. Bobrow says. “The doctors realize that their revenue depends on all of them bringing in more patients and having patients come back.”

Being savvy about pleasing customers isn’t about spin, says Ben Dattner, a New York-based organizational psychologist and author. Rather, workers need to illustrate the advantages of their products and services to please employers dealing with an ultra-competitive environment.

“Try to get to know your customer, the market and figure out how you can put things together in a package that adds value,” Mr. Dattner says. “Law firms are increasingly recruiting professionals who [bring clients with them]. The actual practice of law is becoming commoditized to some extent, but the ability to bring in customer relationships and be flexible is what companies are increasingly looking for.”

General proficiency. Companies are looking for workers who are flexible and can take on functions in various jobs as market demands change, says Greg Barnett, director of product development at Hogan Assessment Systems, a Tulsa, Okla.-based personality-assessment and consulting firm. That is, companies want workers who are “solid organizational citizens”—quick learners who are compliant, Mr. Barnett says.

“People are being asked to do more,” he says. “There are concerns when applicants are good workers, but not people who are able to learn and change direction and change their performance.”

Dan Ryan, principal at a Nashville, Tenn.-based executive search firm, stresses the importance of project management and communication skills, which also happen to be transferrable. “The ability of people at all levels to clearly communicate is not what it used to be,” he says. People “who can do that very well can differentiate themselves.”

Average fixed mortgage rates in the U.S. over the past week kicked off the new year at or near record lows, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly survey of mortgage rates.

The firm noted the rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage during the period matched its all-time low, making it the fifth straight week the rate has averaged below 4%.

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.91% for the week ended Thursday, down from 3.95% the previous week and 4.77% a year ago. Rates on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 3.23%, down from 3.24% last week and 4.13% a year earlier.

The five-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage, or ARM, averaged 2.86%, down from 2.88% last week and 3.75% a year ago. One-year Treasury-indexed ARM rates averaged 2.8%, up from 2.78% the prior week, though below 3.24% last year.

To obtain the rates, 30-year and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages required an average payment of 0.8 percentage point. Five-year and one-year adjustable-rate mortgages required an average 0.7 percentage point and 0.6 percentage point payment, respectively. A point is 1% of the mortgage amount, charged as prepaid interest.

Hundreds of people have been fleeing areas of north-eastern Nigeria, after a 24-hour wave of violence apparently targeting Christian communities. At least 29 people have died in four attacks in Adamawa state, prompting the state governor to impose a curfew. The Islamist Boko Haram group has said it carried out several attacks.

One Boko Haram faction has warned all southerners – who are mostly Christian and animist – to leave the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria.

Last week President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Yobe and Borno states, as well as Plateau state in central Nigeria and Niger state in the west, following a surge in ethnic and sectarian violence. Adamawa, which borders Borno state where Boko Haram emerged, was not included.

More than 500 people have been killed by the group over the past year.

President Jonathan, who is a Christian, has vowed to crack down on the group but Christian groups have accused him of not doing enough to protect them.

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, said his members would protect themselves against the attacks. “We have the legitimate right to defend ourselves. We’re also saying today that we will do whatever it takes” he said. The pattern of the killings suggested “systematic ethnic and religious cleansing”, he added.

The pastor declined to be specific about how Christians would defend themselves, raising fears of retaliation and an escalation of the violence.

Boko Haram: Timeline of terror

2002: Founded

2009: Hundreds killed when Maiduguri police stations stormed

2009: Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf captured by army, handed to police, later found dead

Sep 2010: Freed hundreds of prisoners from Maiduguri jail

Dec 2010: Bombed Jos, killing 80 people and blamed for New Year’s Eve attack on Abuja barracks

2010-2011: Dozens killed in Maiduguri shootings

May 2011: Bombed several states after president’s inauguration

Jun 2011: Police HQ bombed in Abuja

Aug 2011: UN HQ bombed in Abuja

Nov 2011: Co-ordinated bomb and gun attacks in Yobe and Borno states

Dec 2011: Multiple bomb attacks on Christmas Day kill dozens

At least 17 people were killed in Mubi, in Adamawa, as gunmen opened fire in a town hall where members of the Christian Igbo group were meeting. They had been meeting to organise how to transport the body of an Igbo man who was shot dead by gunmen on motorbikes on Thursday evening.

“It was while they were holding the meeting that gunmen came and opened fire on them,” a resident said. More attacks on a church and hairdressing salon in Adamawa’s capital, Yola, left more than 10 dead. The attacks prompted state governor Murtala Nyako to impose a 24-hour curfew.

Security was tightened and troops were seen patrolling the streets.

A resident in Yola says all shops and businesses are closed and only essential services are being allowed through the deserted town. Meanwhile people fled the streets of the town of Potiskum, in Yobe state, after an attack on banks and the police headquarters followed by a shoot-out between gunmen and security forces.

“We are afraid the soldiers will raid and burn our homes like they do in Maiduguri each time Boko Haram attack,” local resident Amiru Umar told AFP.

The Islamist Boko Haram group said it had carried out the attacks in Mubi and Yola, and another in Gombe on Thursday night in which at least six people died.

The group has staged numerous attacks in northern and central areas in recent months – on Christmas Day it attacked a church near the capital, Abuja, killing dozens of people.

Boko Haram, whose name means ‘Western education is forbidden’, is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

Meanwhile, the government is also facing the bleak prospect of a general strike in two days’ time amid popular fury over its removal of a fuel subsidy which has seen fuel prices double for ordinary Nigerians.

The BBC’s Mark Lobel in Lagos says the strike will overstretch the military, which already appears to have lost control of the situation in the north-east.

Presents fool us easily, research shows. It really is the thought that counts

We live in an age that is obsessed with things. We fill our homes with the latest gadgets and fashions and then, when we run out of space, rent a storage unit.

This obsession is most vividly on display during the holidays, especially now that the weeks after Thanksgiving have become a frenzy of mad sales, long lines and endless emails promoting free shipping. Christmas has become a collective excuse for consumption, as if the best way to celebrate the spirit of the season is to rack up credit-card debt buying stuff for others.

The implicit assumption is that happiness can be gift-wrapped.

Here’s the problem: Material things can give us jolts of pleasure, but that pleasure isn’t rooted in the thing itself. As a result, we end up squandering Christmas looking for joy in all the wrong places.

Consider a new experiment led by the Oxford University researchers Mengfei Huang and Andrew Parker. They were interested in the different neurological reactions triggered by a genuine Rembrandt portrait and a fake one, painted by one of his pupils. Though the canvases might look similar, real Rembrandts are worth about 100 times more.

We pay such different prices for these paintings because we assume that there is something special about an authentic Rembrandt, that the Old Master filled his art with discernible flourishes. Though we might not be able to identify these minor differences, we think we can still appreciate them, which is why we hang Rembrandts in the finest museums and consign his imitators to the basement. We sense great art!

But that’s not what the researchers found. When their subjects were shown real and fake paintings while being monitored in a brain scanner, there was no detectable difference in their sensory reaction. The masterpiece didn’t excite the visual cortex any more than the knock-off did.

The scientists did locate a pattern of brain activity, however, that appeared whenever subjects thought a painting was authentic. There was a spike in activity in the orbitofrontal cortex, a chunk of brain just behind the eyes that’s often associated with perceptions of reward and pleasure. What’s interesting is that this area responded just as robustly when the stamp of authenticity was applied to a fake.

This principle doesn’t just apply to art. In a 2009 experiment, Caltech scientists gave people in brain scanners a range of California Cabernets, priced from $5 to $90. Not surprisingly, the subjects consistently reported that the more expensive wines tasted better. Here’s the catch: the scientists had reshuffled the labels, so that subjects were sometimes given a $90 bottle filled with cheap jug wine. But the pleasure areas of the brain responded solely to the perceived price. A fancy label can make even the cheapest plonk taste great.

Similar results have been achieved with shoes, tequila and jewelry. In study after study, the actual products seem to matter less than our superficial beliefs about them.

Does this mean that the only gifts worth giving are those plastered with prestigious logos?

Quite the opposite. The real moral of this research is that even the most wonderful things in the world—and what’s more wonderful than Rembrandt and fine wine?—aren’t wonderful for purely material reasons. Instead, the joy and beauty we find in these objects depend on all those feelings and beliefs we bring to them, infusing the lifeless possessions with the life of mind. It really is the thought that counts.

Given this psychological reality, we should reassess our holiday priorities, spending less time shopping and more time with the people we’re shopping for. As the Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman observes, “It is only a slight exaggeration to say that happiness is the experience of spending time with people you love and who love you.”

So put down those presents—you’re missing the best part.

JOHANNESBURG — Tens of millions of dollars in diamond profits — perhaps more — are being secretly extracted from state-owned mines in eastern Zimbabwe, bypassing the nation’s treasury and raising fears that President Robert Mugabe is amassing wealth to help extend his 31-year reign, according to monitoring groups, diplomats, lawmakers and analysts.

Even if Mr. Mugabe’s allies in the mining ministry are telling the truth about the number of diamonds produced, the treasury was still shortchanged by at least $60 million last year, according to a budget report by the finance minister, one of the president’s chief opponents.

But the amount of money being withheld from the nation’s coffers may be much larger than that. Experts, and even some members of Mr. Mugabe’s own party, say the president’s allies are lowballing the nation’s diamond figures by millions of dollars, hoping to hide the fact that profits are being diverted for personal and political ends.

“The benefits of the diamond sales go primarily to allies of the president,” said Mike Davis, a specialist at Global Witness, a group that has extensively researched the contested mines in eastern Zimbabwe, known as the Marange fields. The strategy, Mr. Davis added, was “part of a wider attempt by people around Mugabe to seize the diamond wealth for their own political purposes, which in the short term means beating and cheating their way to another election.”

Now that Mr. Mugabe no longer controls the Finance Ministry — the result of a tenuous power-sharing arrangement to end the rampant state-sponsored violence during the 2008 presidential election — analysts say he needs outside income to finance his political operations. Diamonds offer him a rare opportunity to do that, especially now that international monitors have agreed to let Zimbabwe sell vast quantities of them, despite repeated warnings that it would enable Mr. Mugabe to tighten his grip on the nation.

Recent expenditures by Mr. Mugabe and his security forces have worried observers that unaccounted money from Marange, estimated to be one of the world’s richest troves because of its volume of diamonds, is financing his party’s groundwork for the early elections he is seeking next year.

The country’s defense forces, which answer to Mr. Mugabe and helped secure his victory in the last election by force, recently bought a large shipment of weapons and equipment from China, local news media reported. The mining ministry has paid millions of dollars in salary increases for civil servants outside its ranks, a form of patronage intended to win votes, according to some lawmakers and watchdog groups. And Anjin — a Chinese mining company in Marange that local and Western officials say the Zimbabwean military has a direct ownership stake in — is financing a new military academy.

“It’s quite clear that there’s much more money floating around than is justified by the level of economic activity,” said Eddie Cross, a Mugabe opponent in Parliament. He told the legislature in October that, based on information from geologists and production records, one company alone mined $1.4 billion in diamonds in Marange last year, far more than the $300 million the mining ministry had reported for all its operations there.

Questions about the diamonds have even caused some splintering within Mr. Mugabe’s party, ZANU-PF, as some benefit personally while others get cut out.

“I personally don’t think the numbers tally at all,” said a former senior ZANU-PF official, speaking anonymously to maintain relationships within the party. “When you look at the fields they are mining and how rich they are and what they later declare, you see that there must be a huge difference.”

“People are asking, ‘Where is the diamond money?’ ” the official added, “and the answers don’t seem to be coming out.”

While Mugabe officials deny any sleight of hand, other members of his party acknowledge that the nation’s mineral wealth does not always make it into the public treasury.

Edward T. Chindori-Chininga, a ZANU-PF member who is chairman of the Parliament’s committee on mines and energy, said that while 60 percent of the country’s exports came from mining, the sector accounted for only 10 to 15 percent of the government’s revenue. All of Zimbabwean mining, including platinum and gold, needs to make sure “that the money truly does come” to the treasury, he says, though he argues that there is no evidence of his party using any money improperly.

The diamonds have become a vivid symbol of Zimbabwe’s conflicts. International monitors and human rights groups say the army seized the Marange fields in 2008, using “horrific violence against civilians.” The Kimberley Process, an international coalition trying to prevent the trade of diamonds that fuel conflict, initially suspended trading from Marange. But in 2010, under pressure from some of Zimbabwe’s neighbors, it authorized two sales over objections from Western powers like the United States.

Zimbabwe sold an additional four million carats of diamonds in November 2010, and last month it was given official approval to export diamonds from Marange, drawing harsh criticism from human rights groups and some Western nations. Global Witness, which helped to establish the Kimberley Process, quit the coalition in protest last week.

Officials within Mr. Mugabe’s party insist that they have accurately reported all Marange revenue. “It is not possible in Zimbabwe to stash away anything by anybody,” said the mining minister, Obert Mpofu. “The systems are so tight. Everything that has been mined in this country, sold in this country, is accounted for.”

Critics, monitors and diplomats strongly disagree. “We hear very detailed reports of how sales are made through suitcases full of cash and antisanctions units in local banks,” said a Western official. “By those sales and revenue details not being conveyed in treasury figures, it leads many to believe that real sales are higher, possibly much higher.”

The political consequences could be stark. A military operation known as Operation Zhunde Ra Mambo, or “blessings of the chief,” financed by the ZANU-PF member who oversees the state’s interests at Marange, has deployed troops to rural areas to intimidate political opponents, according to one former opposition intelligence operative.

Mr. Mugabe has said the power-sharing deal is not working and has called for elections next year, a year ahead of schedule. Some analysts argue that Mr. Mugabe is pushing for elections because of his poor health — ZANU-PF would crumble or fracture without its leader — and to capitalize on the diamond wealth while he has it.

How much of the profits the nation’s coffers deserve is a matter of fierce debate. In his budget report, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said the government was entitled to at least 75 percent of gross proceeds, but received only 56 percent of reported earnings last year. Mining officials say the treasury got all it was owed.

But whether all the profits are being reported is another matter. One of the mining companies, Mbada, is owned by the state’s Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation and The New Reclamation Group, a company based in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Sandton. The chairman of Mbada is Robert Mhlanga, Mr. Mugabe’s former pilot and a former member of the Zimbabwean defense forces.

A diamond production expert provided what he said were Mbada’s records for November 2010. They indicate that it produced between $100 million and $121 million worth of diamonds in that month, or possibly more than $1 billion that year. If accurate, that means a single company produced more than three times the amount claimed by the mining ministry for all of Marange.

Mr. Mhlanga and David Kassal, an owner of the New Reclamation Group, declined to comment. But skeptics abound.

“The people who are mining are ZANU-PF faithfuls,” said Moses Mare, another Mugabe opponent in Parliament. “They are not mining for the government. They are mining for their leaders.”

Ayew beat Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Samuel Eto’o and Seydou Keita to the title.

“I’m honoured and surprised to receive this prestigious award, especially considering the great players who have won it in the past,” said Ayew.

Did you know?

After being named in Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad on Thursday, Andre’s brother Jordan is in line to become the third of Abedi Pele’s sons to play at the tournament

“I thank all the people who voted for me – in Ghana, in Africa and in the world. “I’m going to work hard to show them they made a good choice.”

The award was voted for by African football fans who nominated their favourites either by text or email. They chose from a shortlist which was drawn up by football experts from every country in Africa, who based their choices on players’ skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency and fair play.

After making an impact on the international stage in 2010, when he impressed observers at both the Africa Cup of Nations and Fifa World Cup, 2011 marked a year when Ayew became a key figure at club level.

He finished the 2010-11 campaign as a regular starter for Marseille for the first time in his career, with his goal tally of 11 aiding his cause. At the start of this season, he struck a hat-trick to help Marseille win the French Super League – and has since contested all but one of his side’s 17 league games, scoring six times.

Injury ruled him out of Marseille’s opening Champions League group game but the Ghanaian has gone on to miss just one minute of European action since then, as the 1993 champions reached the knockout stages.

At international level, Ayew also played a key role in ensuring that the Black Stars qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with an unbeaten record.

Abedi “Pele” Ayew was the first winner of the BBC African Sports Star of the Year award for his achievements in 1991, with the title later turning into the current BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

“Dede” becomes the fifth Ghanaian to win after his father, Sammy Kuffour (2001), Michael Essien (2006) and last year’s winner Asamoah Gyan.

Previous winners of BBC African Footballer of the Year award:

2010 – Asamoah Gyan (Sunderland & Ghana)

2009 – Didier Drogba (Chelsea & Ivory Coast)

2008 – Mohamed Aboutrika (Al Ahly & Egypt)

2007 – Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal & Togo)

2006 – Michael Essien (Chelsea & Ghana)
