That’s a pop objective, and some of her methods were well-nigh universal. Others were Shakira’s own.

Like many a pop star, Shakira sang about love and romance, about shared desire and solitary longing, about regrets and vengeance. The songs that made her a star in Colombia in the 1990s, singing in Spanish, could be contentious; “Si Te Vas” (“If You Go”) tells a straying lover not to expect that he can return. But she can be affectionate, too, as she was in her worldwide 2001 hit in English, “Whenever, Wherever.“ Onstage, she got singalongs in both languages.

She’s a star with a conscience. Between dates on Shakira’s current arena tour was an address, on Wednesday, to the Clinton Global Initiative — Bill Clinton’s gathering for philanthropists, government figures and do-gooders — about her Barefoot Foundation for education in Colombia. At Madison Square Garden, performing barefoot, she greeted the presidents of Chile and Colombia in the audience.

Her concert used sounds of the United States’s cultural clout: rock beats and power-chord buildups or, on songs from her 2009 album, “She Wolf” (Sony Music Latin/Epic), the steady thump and electronics of club music. Yet for every song with a U.S. idiom, Shakira also had one with different international twists. That can be traced partly to her heritage — her last name is Mebarak, and she is Colombian from a family of Lebanese, Spanish and Italian descent — but mostly to her open ears.

After she segued “Whenever, Wherever” into the rock stomp of “Unbelievable,” a 1990 hit by the British band EMF, Shakira turned to another rock song: Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters. ” But she and her band made it sound Andean, with six-beat drumming and the strumming of a ukulele-sized charango. The quick pattering of a Middle Eastern hand drum, the dumbek, transformed other songs, spurring vocal arabesques.

The title song of Shakira’s next album, “Sale el Sol” (“The Sun Comes Out”), due Oct. 19 on Sony Music Latin/Epic, is a determinedly optimistic rocker. Other new songs that she performed are collaborations with Caribbean rappers: a sung and rapped merengue, “Loca, ” and a collaboration with the Puerto Rican duo Calle 13, “Gordita,” which had the rapper Residente’s part on video.

Shakira used her quick-changing voice, which could shift, phrase by phrase, among breathy innocence, sultry belting and quavering, sharpened taunts. And she used her body, with a girlish grin and dance moves of finely calibrated sensuality: angular hip twitches and smooth slow-motion swivels, chest thrusts and sinuous wrist turns, as if her every joint rotates 360 degrees. Two stages kept Shakira close to her fans. Belly dancing, Colombian traditions, hop-hop, salsa and flamenco all figure in Shakira’s moves, and with navel-baring halter tops — one of them flesh-toned — and a giant video screen, no shimmy went unappreciated. For “Ojos Así , ” with a glittery fringed shawl around her waist, she did high-speed hip vibrations to match the accents of the dumbek; a lonely song became a show of confidence.

Shakira’s pop aspirations are now appreciated worldwide. She ended the concert with “Waka Waka,” the song she brought to the World Cup this summer. Her coming album has versions in Spanish and English; she sang the English one, calling for tenacity that could be applied on and off the soccer field. It started with a march beat akin to U2, then moved into a groove, and lyrics, from Cameroon; Shakira led a dance with palms pressed together and angular shoulder moves.

At the end, Shakira declared, “We are all Africa!” It was globalization as pure positive thinking.

Accra, Oct. 14, GNA – The trial of one of Ghana’s renowned hip-life artistes, Emmanuel Botchway, aka Kwaw Kese, who is accused of fraud on Wednesday resumed after the annual recess of the courts.
Kese has been arraigned for allegedly defrauding his ex-lover, Ms. Happi Chappell, of 7,000 pounds sterling.

The money was to have been used for a building at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.
He has denied the charge and is on a GH¢15,000 bail. Mounting the witness box at an Accra Circuit Court, Ms Francisca Okine, a fashion designer, admitted knowing Kese.

Ms. Okine said on April 20, this year she was at home when Ms. Chappell in the company of Kese visited her at Osu. The fourth prosecution witness said she together with Ms. Chappell and Kese went to meet a contractor at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

In the presence of the contractor, Ms Okine said, Ms. Chappell asked the contractor to contact Kese whenever he needed money for the project. Witness said she later heard that Ms. Chappell had given Kese 7,000 pound sterling.

In a cross-examination by Naa Odofoley Nortey, counsel for Kese, witness said she could not remember the date the three of them visited Prampram.

The prosecution earlier told the court that Kese and Ms. Chappell were “good lovers” in 2008 and she decided to develop her plot of land at Prampram after the two had visited the site.

The prosecution said in January this year, Ms. Chappell returned from the United Kingdom and gave 7,000 pounds to Kese, but he failed to use the money for the project.
After several attempts to collect her money, she lodged a complaint with the Police and Kese was arrested.

During Police interrogation, Kese admitted receiving 1,000 pounds and not 7,000 pounds.
Hearing continues on October 22.

Accra, Sept. 23, GNA – The prosecution in the case of narcotic related offences involving Sima Ibrahim, the Chief Executive Officer of Exopa Modelling Agency, on Wednesday prayed for an adjournment to follow up on new developments that had come up during investigations.

According to Mr George Kwadwo Ofori, a Senior Attorney, they were also waiting for the final results of tests on the substances found on Sima, which had been forwarded to the Ghana Standards Board. He noted that although initial tests on the substances proved positive for cocaine, they were waiting for the final and definitive results from the GSB.

But his counsel, Mr Kwame Akuffo registered his displeasure at the prosecution’s submission saying that amounted to abuse of court processes.
He said he wondered why the prosecution at the last adjournment told the court that they had completed investigations and they were prepared to put their witnesses in the dock but had only come to court to submit that there had been new developments in their investigations.

Mr. Akuffo informed the court that a consular officer from the German Embassy who was in court to interact with Sima on Wednesday was turned away by Prison officers. He prayed the court to direct the Prison officers to give them access to Sima since he (Sima)was a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany.

When the court asked who the Prison officer was, he(Prison officer) stood up and said he could not allow the Consular officer to speak to Sima in court adding that they should apply to the Ghana Prisons Service for permission.

After remanding him into prison custody and adjourning the matter to October 8,the court directed the Prisons Service to give the Consular officer access to Sima.

Sima, who is facing charges of attempting to export narcotic drugs and possessing narcotic drug without lawful excuse, has pleaded not guilty to charges preferred against him.

He allegedly concealed five kilograms of drugs suspected to be cocaine in tubers of yam while travelling abroad on September 9 and was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport.

The prosecution said on September 7, Sima arrived at the Kotoka International Airport to board a Lufthansa Airline flight to Frankfurt, Germany. While going through departure formalities, officials of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) opened his luggage and found four tubers of yam which had been cut and joined.

This aroused the suspicion of the NACOB officials who cut the yams open and found a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine concealed in them. The prosecution said when Sima was questioned, he claimed ownership of the drug and said it was given to him by one Salifu at Nima in Accra to be given to someone in Germany for a fee of 3,200 dollars.

When his house in Tema Community 10 was searched, operatives of NACOB found a bread knife, glue and an implement, which, he said, he used in packaging the drugs.

The prosecution said the substance had been sent to the Ghana Standards Board for analytical examination.
The court has directed that Sima’s vehicle, which has been impounded, should remain in the custody of the Police pending the determination of the matter.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Kanye West called Taylor Swift with a “very sincere” apology Tuesday for interrupting her acceptance speech at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Swift said. Kanye West called Taylor Swift to apologize for hijacking her speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

West phoned Swift following her appearance on ABC’s “The View” Tuesday, her publicist said. Swift talked about it in a radio interview with ABC.

“Kanye did call me and he was very sincere in his apology,” she said. “And I accepted that apology.”

The apology came the morning after West, in an interview with Jay Leno, appeared to blame the pain of his mother’s death two years ago for his “rude” behavior. The rapper told Leno he would now “take some time off” to think about how he will “make it through the rest of this life.”

West’s appearance on the prime-time premiere of “The Jay Leno Show” capped a 24-hour period that began Sunday evening with him strolling down the red carpet at New York’s Radio City Music Hall while gulping from a bottle of cognac.

The low-light came about an hour later, when West jumped onstage and grabbed the microphone from Swift as she accepted the Best Female Video award. West declared that Beyonce Knowles should have won.
Don’t Miss

West appeared sober and humble when he spoke on Leno’s Los Angeles stage Monday, an appearance that was originally to be just musical. Video Watch West give an emotional interview to Leno »

“I immediately knew in this situation that it was wrong,” West told Leno. “And it wasn’t a spectacle, you know. It was actually someone’s emotions, you know, that I stepped on and it was very, it was just, it was rude, period.”

When Leno asked West what his mother would have thought of his behavior, he fell silent for more than a dozen seconds and appeared near tears. Leno pressed him again.

“Would she be disappointed in this? Would she give you a lecture?” West gave a rambling, emotional answer:

“Yeah, you know, obviously, you know, I deal with hurt and, you know, so many, you know, celebrities, they never take the time off, and I’ve never taken the time off to really, you know, I just, music after music and tour after tour on tour, and I’m just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else’s hurt.”
see full schedule »

West said he wasn’t trying to justify his behavior, “because I was just in the wrong. That’s clear.”

“But I need to, after this, just to take some time off and analyze how I’m going to, you know, make it through rest of this life, how I’m going to improve,” he said. “Because, I am a celebrity and that’s something I have to deal with.”

He said he would like to personally apologize to Swift, a 19-year-old pop-country singer.

“And if there’s anything I can do to help Taylor in the future or help anyone, I want to live this thing. It’s hard sometimes, so.”

After his four-minute talk with Leno, West joined fellow hip-hop superstars Jay-Z and Rihanna to perform “Run This Town,” a song they recorded together.

The timing of West’s antics came at a good time for Leno, who embarked on a new era of his career Monday. After 17 years of hosting “The Tonight Show,” Leno debuted his 10 p.m. weeknight talk show on NBC.

Apologies from celebrities behaving badly have boosted Leno’s ratings.

In 1995, Leno enjoyed a ratings-grabbing moment when he asked actor Hugh Grant, “What the hell were you thinking?” Grant had been arrested two weeks earlier for public lewd conduct with a Hollywood hooker.

When Grant told Leno “I did a bad thing,” it gave Leno’s “Tonight Show” a viewership bump that has been credited with solidifying his lead over rival David Letterman in the late-night ratings war.

This is just the kind of “immediacy” Leno was talking about in a call with reporters last week.
advertisement

“The idea here is that we’ll tape a new, fresh show every single day, talking about the events that happened that day that night,” Leno said.
