Ghana and Marseille winger Andre “Dede” Ayew has been named the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year for 2011. The 21-year-old took over a third of the votes to follow in the footsteps of his father, Abedi “Pele” Ayew, who won the inaugural BBC award in 1991.

Ayew beat Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Samuel Eto’o and Seydou Keita to the title.

“I’m honoured and surprised to receive this prestigious award, especially considering the great players who have won it in the past,” said Ayew.

Did you know?

After being named in Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad on Thursday, Andre’s brother Jordan is in line to become the third of Abedi Pele’s sons to play at the tournament

“I thank all the people who voted for me – in Ghana, in Africa and in the world. “I’m going to work hard to show them they made a good choice.”

The award was voted for by African football fans who nominated their favourites either by text or email. They chose from a shortlist which was drawn up by football experts from every country in Africa, who based their choices on players’ skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency and fair play.

After making an impact on the international stage in 2010, when he impressed observers at both the Africa Cup of Nations and Fifa World Cup, 2011 marked a year when Ayew became a key figure at club level.

He finished the 2010-11 campaign as a regular starter for Marseille for the first time in his career, with his goal tally of 11 aiding his cause. At the start of this season, he struck a hat-trick to help Marseille win the French Super League – and has since contested all but one of his side’s 17 league games, scoring six times.

Injury ruled him out of Marseille’s opening Champions League group game but the Ghanaian has gone on to miss just one minute of European action since then, as the 1993 champions reached the knockout stages.

At international level, Ayew also played a key role in ensuring that the Black Stars qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with an unbeaten record.

Abedi “Pele” Ayew was the first winner of the BBC African Sports Star of the Year award for his achievements in 1991, with the title later turning into the current BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

“Dede” becomes the fifth Ghanaian to win after his father, Sammy Kuffour (2001), Michael Essien (2006) and last year’s winner Asamoah Gyan.

Lampard – once again excluded from Chelsea’s starting line-up by manager Andre Villas-Boas – came off the bench to score the winner with seven minutes left after Joleon Lescott handled Daniel Sturridge’s shot.

Mario Balotelli gave City a lead their early domination deserved but Chelsea forced their way back into contention through Raul Meireles’s equaliser before half-time.

Roberto Mancini’s side were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Gael Clichy was sent off, leaving Chelsea to make the most of their numerical advantage and record a third win in succession to leave City with a two-point lead over neighbours Manchester United at the top of the table.

Title bid back on track – Villas-Boas

City will regret not putting the game out of reach in an imperious opening spell – but Chelsea demonstrated the resilience of old to survive that siege and emerge with a win that puts them only seven points off the Premier League summit.

Villas-Boas insisted Chelsea were showing signs of a revival after beating Newcastle United and Valencia following a torrid spell. This, however, was a serious examination of Chelsea’s recovery and they passed the test successfully.

And Lampard, pushed to the margins in the last two games, proved his character to step up under pressure in the closing minutes to convert that vital penalty.

City’s unbeaten league run came to an end after 15 games – now Mancini and his players must regroup ahead of Sunday’s meeting with improving Arsenal at Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea made one enforced change, with Jose Bosingwa replacing the suspended David Luiz – while Balotelli was recalled to instant effect by City.

CITY’S 10-MAN BAND

Continue reading the main storyManchester City have now had three men sent off in the last six Premier League games

Sergio Aguero must take much of the credit with a turn that left John Terry trailing and a sublime pass with the outside of his right foot into the path of Balotelli. The young Italian may be turbulent elsewhere, but in the penalty area he is calmness personified, as he proved by dismissing the attentions of Branislav Ivanovic to round Petr Cech to score.

City were in command and should have doubled their lead after 14 minutes when Aguero brushed aside Bosingwa and wrong-footed Ashley Cole, only to drag his shot wastefully wide.

David Silva then appealed for a penalty when he fell under Bosingwa’s challenge – but referee Mark Clattenburg waved play on while declining to punish the Spaniard for diving.

Mancini disappointed to see unbeaten run end

Chelsea, as much by force of will as any real superiority, dragged themselves into a game which had been completely in City’s control and were rewarded with an equaliser 11 minutes before the break. Once again the goal owed almost as much to the creation as the finish, with the impressive Sturridge escaping from the toiling Clichy before crossing for the incoming Meireles to volley powerfully past City keeper Joe Hart.

Former Manchester City player Sturridge was one of Chelsea’s leading lights on a stormy evening and he was only just off target with a rising drive a minute after the restart from Juan Mata’s free-kick.

City went down to 10 men just before the hour when Clichy, who had been booked early in the second half for fouling Sturridge, tripped Ramires to earn his second yellow card. It capped a miserable night for the defender, who had suffered in the face of Sturridge’s pace and threat.

Chelsea, having been outplayed in the early stages, now sensed victory and Villas-Boas introduced Lampard with 17 minutes left in an attempt to make their numbers count.

Mancini appeared to have settled for a point by removing Aguero for Kolo Toure and sending on Nigel de Jong for Silva – but Chelsea were not to be denied.

And Lampard it was who put Chelsea in front with seven minutes left. There were few complaints from City after Sturridge’s shot hit the raised hand of Lescott – leaving Lampard to drill the penalty straight down the middle before celebrating with the supporters behind the goal in the Matthew Harding Stand.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas took the bold decision to drop the vastly experienced Frank Lampard for a game that could have shaped the Blues boss’s future – then saw another of Stamford Bridge’s old guard prove the catalyst to confirm a place in the last 16 as Group E winners.

Drogba, who has been linked with a move as he holds out for a two-year contract, was in irresistible mood and terrorised Valencia throughout, scoring a goal in each half as Chelsea ran out emphatic winners, putting the Spanish side out of the competition in the process.

The Ivorian also played his part in Chelsea’s second with a run of trademark power and purpose midway through the first half to set up Ramires, a goal which came just as Valencia threatened to work their way back into the game.

Media persecute Chelsea – Villas-Boas

Chelsea’s win and progress from the group stage was a rich reward for Villas-Boas’s bravery in leaving out Lampard, completing a satisfactory few days for the 34-year-old Portuguese after a vital Premier League win at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Villas-Boas has been under the spotlight following Chelsea’s recent struggles, but a measure of calm and stability can now be restored as they play for the familiar territory of the later stages of the Champions League.

Lampard remained an unused substitute but Chelsea’s win more than justified Villas-Boas’s decision to hand midfield responsibility to Ramires, Raul Meireles and impressive youngster Oriol Romeu.

For all the debate about Lampard, his absence was irrelevant in the opening exchanges as Drogba used all his physical presence to prey on Valencia’s weaknesses.

He took only three minutes to settle the nerves around a noisy Stamford Bridge, taking advantage of good work by Valencia old boy Juan Mata to roll a left-foot finish beyond Diego Alves.

Valencia’s response was robust and positive. Jordi Alba rattled the outside of an upright before David Albelda’s long-range effort was splendidly clawed away by the diving Petr Cech.

As Valencia threatened to force their way back into contention, Drogba was again the driving force as Chelsea increased their lead after 22 minutes. He surged through the heart of Valencia’s rearguard to play in Ramires, but it still took inept defending from Victor Ruiz to allow the Brazilian to steal in and poke his shot past Diego Alves.

Daniel Sturridge’s pace was causing problems on right flank and twice either side of the interval he created chances but saw his efforts blocked at the near post.

Valencia signalled that they still posed a danger as Cech again saved well from Sofiane Feghouli’s angled shot – which prompted Villas-Boas to make a change, sending on Jon Obi Mikel for Ramires.

It was not a decision that was universally acclaimed around Stamford Bridge, with Lampard receiving a warm ovation as he warmed up at the same time.

Drogba, inevitably, was the man who upped the tempo to ease any lingering concerns, first firing narrowly wide before running on to another astute Mata pass to score with 14 minutes left.

He was then replaced to a standing ovation as Villas-Boas gave Fernando Torres a run-out as the closing stages turned into little more than a formality.

By GABRIELE MARCOTTI – - – - Sunday morning marked the passing of Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, better known simply as Socrates. The Brazilian midfielder was 57. He is survived by his wife and six sons. Sometimes greatness is measured through intangibles like leadership and personality, sometimes it is gauged through empirical achievement, like statistics and championships. Sometimes it’s a combination of all those things. But Socrates stood on an even higher plane: Soccer will probably never again produce anyone like him.

The 1982 Brazilian team that he captained was perhaps the greatest never to win the World Cup (along with Hungary in 1954 and Holland in 1974). It was also one of the last Brazil teams to fully embody the romantic stereotype that comes to mind when we think of the green-and-gold. Sublime touches, languid pace, creativity … the sheer joy of what they call “jogo bonito,” or the beautiful game. Zico was probably the best player on that Brazil side, but Socrates was its philosophy made flesh.

At 6-foot-4 and rail-thin, he strolled through the midfield sporting his trademark beard and headband. He could have been Bill Walton’s long lost Brazilian cousin. On the ball though, he was more Magic Johnson, thanks to his signature move, the no-look backheel pass. It’s one of those things that isn’t particularly hard to do, but is frightfully difficult to do well, mainly because you have to weight and execute a pass to a point on the pitch you can’t actually see. Plus, rather than kicking the ball with your foot, where you at least have some level of sensitivity, you strike it with the bony part of your heel. When you see it these days, it’s often a hit-and-hope move of last resort. For Socrates it was his bread and butter, something he nonchalantly pulled off in congested midfields, surprising not just his opponents, but often his teammates too, who would suddenly receive assists in mid-stride.

The backheel is not something any youth coach teaches. Nor is it something any pro coach particularly wants to encourage, precisely because it is so unpredictable. But in the carefree world of 1970s Brazilian soccer it had its place, especially when used as effectively as Socrates used it.

His résumé is actually surprisingly bare. A few regional titles in Brazil, just one season in a major European league (with Italy’s Fiorentina), 60 appearances and 22 goals for an outstanding Brazil team, albeit one that failed to win the World Cup. Yet that only tells part of the story.

Even as a professional, Socrates was a throwback to the amateur era, one where athletes were not defined solely by the sport they played. You want to talk student-athlete? For the first chunk of his career he was playing full-time for Botafogo while going to medical school at the University of Sao Paulo’s campus in Ribeirao Preto. He didn’t actually practice medicine until after his retirement, but when he tucked away this rocket against the Soviet Union in Brazil’s opening match of the 1982 World Cup, he became the first (and probably last) M.D. to notch a goal on the game’s biggest stage.

He was also an activist who, while at Corinthians in the late 1970s, founded a movement opposing the country’s military regime. A self-described Maoist and pacifist, his heroes – unsurprisingly – were Che Guevara and John Lennon, making him an instant legend among the radical chic Euro-left. After retirement in 1989, he went back to university, eventually earning a Ph.D. in philosophy.

The talent and erudition, the political views and beard-and-bandanna look, all of it meshed with his avowed taste for tobacco and alcohol to make him a romantic outsized figure: part rebel, part intellectual, part Latin hunk, part superstar. You can’t definitively rule out the possibility that one day someone may match or even surpass his achievements on and off the pitch, though it may take a long while for the next doctor/political activist/World Cup legend to roll on the scene. They may even do it with a beard, shaggy hair and a bandanna.

But what is certain is that nobody will do it with the style, panache and overall “cool” of Socrates. And they certainly won’t be spraying no-look backheels all over the pitch when they do.

Tim Krul saved Frank Lampard’s penalty – awarded for a foul on Daniel Sturridge by Yohan Cabaye – but Didier Drogba headed the Blues in front.

Newcastle missed a host of second-half chances before Salomon Kalou sealed the points with a neat 88th-minute finish.

Sturridge then side-footed a third in injury time to deflate the Magpies.

Pardew ‘expected’ Luiz red card

Chelsea just about deserved the win – only their fourth in 10 games – which was built on the back of the kind of display they have found so difficult to consistently produce this season.

However, after being largely outplayed in the first half, a spirited Newcastle were much improved in the second period and they will argue that the whole nature of the game should have been different from the fourth minute on.

David Luiz’s clear foul on Demba Ba when the striker was seemingly clear on goal should have been punished with a red card, but instead referee Mike Dean opted to brandish a yellow, much to the chagrin of the home players and manager.

With a full compliment of players, Chelsea were subsequently able to impose themselves on an, at times, accommodating home side.

Spanish midfielder Juan Mata was the architect for the visitors and Sturridge the regular beneficiary. That the young striker remained goalless after the first 45 minutes was down to a matter of inches and the sheer quality of home keeper Krul.

DID YOU KNOW?

This is the first time Chelsea have kept back-to-back Premier League clean sheets since January, and have won consecutive top-flight away matches in 10 months

It was Sturridge’s burst in the box after being released by Mata that earned Chelsea their penalty, but Krul got down well to his left to keep out Lampard’s poorly hit effort.

The home side did not learn though and three more times Mata released Sturridge only for the striker to be denied firstly by the post, then by Krul and finally by his own wayward shooting.

However, when called upon Drogba proved more clinical, powerfully heading in over the diving Krul from Mata’s delivery.

The closest the home side came to a goal in the first half was a Ba header from Peter Lovenkrands’ cross that hit the post and a flicked effort from the former, which Petr Cech tipped over.

However, after making most of the running before the break, Chelsea were on the back foot for the majority of the second period.

Villas-Boas lauds Chelsea’s ‘important step’

Early on Drogba headed against his own crossbar from a corner, with Krul again called upon to rescue his side as Ramires immediately broke down the other end.

Substitute Shola Ameobi struck a post with a superb shot from 20 yards, before his brother Sammy, who was introduced midway through the half, saw an effort cleared off the line by John Terry.

With Newcastle committing more and more men forward to salvage a draw, Chelsea struck twice late on to kill the game and give it a more flattering slant than it probably deserved.

First substitute Fernando Torres broke away before being forced to check – but still had the presence of mind to find Kalou, who finished into the corner.

And Sturridge struck the goal he deserved in injury time, cutting in from the right before drilling low past Krul.

In Spain, the world’s best football player – Lionel Messi – scored his 50th goal of the season to become the first player in La Liga to reach that milestone in one season. With the football world at his feet and scoring at will, there was no doubt the little magician was going to set a new goal scoring record in La Liga.

If strikers were paid based on the goals they score, the peerless Lionel Messi would be the most expensive striker in football. But the reigning Best Footballer is not. That tag – the most expensive striker – hangs on the neck of Fernando Torres who transferred from Liverpool to Chelsea for over $70 million dollars. So much for austerity in the UK.

While the merciless Messi scores with ease and aplomb in the Spainish League, Fernando Torres was becoming a stumblehorse rather than the thoroughbred goal poacher Chelsea thought they had doled out maga millions for. It is that bad when a football coach claims that “he does not ask his strikers to score goals.” Who was Ancelotti kidding. Chelsea billionaire owner would have bought a goal for his prized misfiring striker if he could. But money cannot buy you goals as Chelsea and Fernando Torres would attest to.

But when it seemed the football gods have deserted Torres, luck smiled on him over the weekend. The groans and moans that echoed throughout Stamford Bridge over thirteen league games as Torres failed to score gave way to massive celebration and a palpable sigh of relief when Torres end his drought against West Ham over the weekend.

In case you have been living under a rock and you missed the birds chirping, the most expensive football player finally scored in his 14th game for Chelsea. The celebration that followed after Torres scored with an assit from a puddle in a waterlogged field on a rainy day summed up the relief for Torres, Chelsea and his coach Ancelotti; even though he did not ask his striker to score.

So as Messi scores, as he does, to set new records in La Liga, Chelsea fans can only hope Torres has found his scoring boots to do the job he was paid all that money to do – score goals.

You are forgiven if you are among those who took a swipe at the Black Stars and their teeming supporters for celebrating after a historic draw with England on the spiritual grounds of the beautiful game – Wembley. A disgusted fan on quipped on facebook, “have our expectations become so low such that we celebrate after a draw against England?”

I destest mediocrity so to an extent I can understand why one can be dismissive for celebrating after a tie game. But in all fairness, I think the celebrations that erupted in Wembley following Asamoah Gyan’s goal had more to do with the timing and quality of the goal than the actual outcome of the match. In a highly anticipated game that match the festive atmosphere in Wembley, the writer like many ardent fans who watched the match had resigned themselves to defeat as the clocking was ticking down until that moment of brilliance by Asamoah Gyan that even Messi, the current best joggler of the round leather would be proud of came.

As Capello in his 100-words rich vocabulary said after the game, ” it was not a friendlygame, there were two teams on the pitch playing well, strongly with lots of tackles. Ghana are a really good team, the performance was fantastic.” The England manager was not mincing words about his description of the much awaited match-up between Ghana and England. Unlike many international friendlies, this one actually lived up to the hype. Never mind that England played a “weakened” side after Capello decided to appeases Chelsea and Manchester United by sending home its players under the excuse of fatigue. England’s Team B or not, the Three Lions had enough quality to outplay Black Stars and created more goal-scoring opportunities.

Ghana, having waited for so long for the opportunity to play England had to show that its quater-finals performance in South Africa was no fluke. And the Black Stars of Ghana made a strong case as an emerging powerhouse with their second-half performance after being outplayed by England in the first forty-five minutes of the game. And to cap their display with a sublime goal by the “Baby Jet” within the second minute of three minutes of added time merited the delirious celebrations and the massive partying into the night.

This is my Pesewa! Have your say . . .

England players Peter Crouch and James Milner have thrown their backing behind manager Fabio Capello’s decision to reinstate John Terry as captain. Terry has controversially returned in place of Rio Ferdinand after being dropped from the role amid allegations over his private life 13 months ago.

“It’s the manager’s call and there are no problems from anyone,” said Crouch. “I’m pleased for John and we move on.” Milner added: “JT has shown week in, week out what a good leader he is.” Tuesday’s news conference was the first opportunity for any England player to speak with the media after since his reinstatement on Monday. Terry admitted he was “not everybody’s cup of tea” amid speculation there was unrest in the camp about Capello’s decision, ahead of Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales in Cardiff.

“Fabio has the trust of the squad, we stand behind him and hopefully we can keep winning.” England’s James Milner
But Crouch said the captaincy issue had not even been broached by the players and Chelsea skipper Terry – who could only look on as the armband was passed around among his team-mates in the friendly with Denmark last month – had everyone’s support.

“We’ve not really talked about it, no,” said the Spurs striker. “It’s between the manager and the captain, whoever he wants to pick. “There’s a lot of talk of unrest but it’s not an issue. John Terry has always been fantastic on the pitch, leading Chelsea to Doubles, and he’ll be good for us again.

“It is a shame for Rio because he’s a top player and great to have around because he’s a natural leader too. It’s a shame that he’s had so many injuries and that’s probably why the manager decided to make the change rather than have the armband being passed around.

“The manager wanted to stick with JT and that’s fine with all of us.”

Milner believes it is crucial that the more experienced players in the England squad all act like captains, and says it is more important that they continue to improve as a team.

“It’s business as usual, the manager’s made a decision and everyone’s happy for JT and disappointed for Rio,” said the Manchester City midfielder.

“We have lots of good leaders and you need more than one anyway. It helps to have so much experience around and we’ve got a good combination of that as well as the younger players.

“JT has shown with Chelsea and the times he plays for England, he puts his head in where people wouldn’t go and he leads off the field too. It’s important to have a link between players and management, and players who will say what they think.

“A few things have changed from the World Cup, but ultimately all that is important is that we keep trying to get better and better.

“On paper we know we can beat anyone and we’ve started the qualifying campaign pretty well. Fabio has the trust of the squad, we stand behind him and hopefully we can keep getting wins on the board.”

Three English Soccer Teams Have Each Spent More Than $350 Million on Players; Now They Meet.

Gareth Barry of Manchester City, left, battles with Manchester United's Darren Fletcher on Nov. 10

Saturday’s soccer match between Manchester United and Manchester City of the English Premier League, a game known as the “Manchester Derby,” is likely to be played in the sort of bleak and drizzly weather conditions one might expect.

But this won’t be just another regularly-scheduled whistle stop on the British soccer calendar. It will be the richest match played in any sport, at any time, anywhere on the planet Earth.

According to analyst estimates, team statements and media reports, the players on the field and on the two benches in the Manchester Derby will have cost their teams roughly $850 million to acquire, or about as much as NASA spent to refurbish the Hubble Telescope.

Those numbers should prove comforting to baseball fans who are worried about the profligacy of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. When those teams meet, there’s only about $380 million in player investments on display. In pro football, the NFL record belongs to the free-spending Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, who met twice this season. But the total only came to about $350 million.

Even Spain’s two notoriously extravagant teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona—which are the two biggest soccer clubs in the world by revenues—fall short in this arena when they play one another. While Madrid’s player investments are on par with the top English clubs, it’s not scheduled to play any of them this season. Barcelona still draws many of its players from its youth development program, which greatly reduces the amount of money it takes to assemble a team.

The Derby’s reign at the top of the money pile won’t last long. Next month’s match between Manchester City and Chelsea will shoot past it to set a new combined record of about $900 million. By the time Manchester United and Chelsea (combined player investment: over $800 million) square off in two upcoming matches this season, the Derby will have fallen to fourth-place on the all-time list.

These records reflect a wave of spending by English clubs this year during the recently completed period known as the “transfer window,” when teams in the EPL can juggle their rosters. Unlike North American team sports, soccer clubs don’t just acquire players for the cost of their salaries. They’re also expected to pay the player’s current club an additional “transfer fee.”

The $600 Million Cover Charge

As Manchester’s top teams prepare to face each other, their owners have ponied up well over half a billion dollars combined in transfer fees alone – that’s before paying a dime in salaries – to fill their rosters. A look at some of the more notable estimated fees paid on each side:

MANCHESTER UNITED

Dimitar Berbatov – $49.6 million

Rio Ferdinand – $48.4 million

Wayne Rooney – $41.3 million

Michael Carrick – $30.1 million

Luis Anderson – $29 million

Luis Nani – $27.4 million

Nemanja Vidic – $11.6 million

Javier Hernandez – $10 million

Patrice Evra – $9.3 million

Rafael – $8.4 million (with twin brother Fabio)

Ji-Sung Park – $6.4 million

Edwin Van der Sar – $3.2 million

TOTAL – $274.7 million

MANCHESTER CITY

Edin Dzeko – $43.5 million

James Milner – $41.9 million

Carlos Tevez – $41.1 million

Yaya Toure – $41.1 million

David Silva – $38.7 million

Mario Balotelli – $36 million

Aleksandar Kolarov – $30.6 million

Kolo Toure – $25.8 million

Gareth Barry – $19.3 million

Jerome Boateng – $16.9 million

Pablo Zabaleta – $10.4 million

Vincent Kompany – $9.7 million

Joe Hart – $2.4 million (maximum fee, dependent on appearances)

TOTAL – $357.4 million

These payments, which are usually many multiples above what the player will earn, have increased dramatically at the high end in recent years. For instance, Chelsea spent $80 million during last month’s transfer window for Spanish striker Fernando Torres. On Saturday, Manchester City will show off Edin Dzeko, the Bosnian striker the team acquired last month for $44 million.

These financial records may not be broken any time soon. Beginning next season, the first effects of European soccer’s new rules on spending, known as the Financial Fair Play regulations, will ripple through the free-spending front offices of the world’s best-known clubs. The rules will largely prohibit clubs from spending more than they earn in revenue.

While the regulations won’t be enforced until the 2013-2014 season, the accounting process will begin next season, with the likely result that the clubs that have leapfrogged to the fore by shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire star players will be forced to curb spending.

“It will have to affect their behavior,” says Dan Jones, who leads the Sports Business Group for Deloitte, the publisher of two annual reports on international soccer finances. “For the clubs that want to participate in European competitions, they will have to bring things back into line and break even.”

Representatives for Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea did not return messages seeking comment.

While these three Premier League teams (obviously) rank near the top among all international club teams in spending, they may not be able to generate enough revenue to sustain those levels under the new rules. Among all international clubs, Manchester United ranks No. 3 by revenues, Chelsea is No. 6 and Manchester City No. 11 according the to the latest Deloitte Football Money League report, released Thursday. Manchester City only cracked the top 20 for the first time last year.

Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich, and Manchester City’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan have used their own personal fortunes to invest in improving their teams.

Under the new system implemented by UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, “the drive will be to generate more revenue from your local market to … spend on players,” said Rob Tilliss, principal at InnerCircle Sports. “The rules will create stability and make it punitive to overspend on players beyond your means.”

For now, though, fans of runaway sports profligacy (you know who you are!) will have plenty to cheer about.

Acheampong was a general who became the Ghanaian head of state in a bloodless coup in 1972. He was overthrown six years later, placed under house arrest, and executed by a firing squad in June 1979.

There can be no taping over history, but Peprah’s vivacious mother, Elizabeth, senses it being rewound whenever her middle son walks through the door of the home he bought for her in this Dallas suburb.

“He’s like my dad reincarnated,” she said Wednesday.

Peprah, 27, visited his mother two nights earlier upon arriving in town for the N.F.C. champion Packers’ clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV on Sunday at Cowboys Stadium.

It was a circuitous journey home. After playing at Alabama, Peprah was drafted in the fifth round by the Giants in 2006 but did not make the team. He was picked up by Green Bay and released last season after he sustained a knee injury. Peprah appeared in two games late last season with the Atlanta Falcons, then was re-signed by the Packers.

Injuries thrust Peprah into the starting lineup in Week 5 and that is where he remained, contributing 63 tackles and 2 interceptions.

“You can’t take anything for granted in this league,” he said, “and you have to take advantage of each opportunity.” He added, “After what my mom, my family’s been through, I feel like I can handle anything.”

Peprah’s grandfather Acheampong (pronounced aye-CHAM-pong) established the National Redemption Council and sought to make his agriculturally rich country more self-reliant. The council militarized Ghanaian government, and Acheampong, amid accusations of corruption, gradually lost public support.

He was forced out in July 1978 and succeeded by Lt. Gen. Fred Akuffo, who was overthrown and executed with Acheampong.

Elizabeth Peprah, who had six younger siblings, said she was the last family member to see her father alive. She made him a dinner of fufu, a West African staple that is similar to a dumpling, and soup. The next morning, June 16, 1979, she said she was awakened by a phone call from a friend who informed her of her father’s death.

“That night when I took him his food, he said, ‘Tell everybody I was a good man and pray for me,’ ” said Elizabeth Peprah, who was 25 at the time. “The way he said it, it bothered me the whole way home.”

Moments before he was executed, Acheampong took off his watch and handed it to an executioner. Was he sending a message? Peprah’s mother often wonders, Did he want it returned to his loved ones so they would know his last thoughts were of them, or was it meant as one final magnanimous gesture to his enemies?

The watch found its way back to the family, and over time the story has found a place in Peprah’s heart.

“There was a nobility to his life,” he said, adding: “I think because I grew up hearing his story, I’m desensitized to it a little bit. I might take it for granted.”

Elizabeth Peprah and her husband, Josh, a lieutenant in Acheampong’s army, fled to Europe with their 18-month-old son, Richard. They ended up in the United States, in Fort Worth, where Josh studied engineering at Texas Christian University.

Peprah was born in 1983 in Fort Worth, and shortly thereafter the family settled in East Plano. His parents divorced when he was in middle school, and his father returned to Ghana to work for the government.

“I don’t want to be dark and graphic when I say this,” Peprah said, ‘but a lot of people in my mom’s situation might have contemplated the easy way out, if you know what I’m saying.” He added, “Just the fact she was able to make it is amazing.”

Left to shepherd three rambunctious boys through adolescence, Elizabeth Peprah shelved her dream of becoming a nurse and worked multiple jobs, including an all-night shift as a gas station cashier.

“Every time I’d go to that job,” she said, “I’d get out of my car and pray, ‘Dear Lord, keep me safe for these eight hours.’ I can’t lie to you. Inside I’d be shaking, but I would act like I was fine.”

“I was determined not to become a failure,” added Elizabeth Peprah, who still works as a cashier at a Home Depot in Allen. “I was determined not to let the opportunities my children had in this country slip away.”

Richard Peprah, now 32, played football at Wyoming and earned a master’s degree in marketing. He is thinking about pursuing a doctorate while his wife attends medical school. The youngest son, Josh Peprah, 19, is a redshirt freshman defensive back at Wisconsin. At Alabama, Peprah earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s in financial planning.

He is careful with his money, borrowing his girlfriend’s digital camera for media day at Cowboys Stadium rather than replacing the one he lost. Peprah appeared to spare no expense on his mother’s two-story home, which has four bedrooms and a gourmet kitchen.

“It feels good to be able to take care of her a little bit,” said Peprah, who did not appreciate how much joy his mother took in his success until he went to see her Monday.

He walked through the front door, where a red plastic runner covered the hardwood floor like a red carpet. Green and yellow streamers hung from the ceiling, 26 balloons floated in the air and congratulatory signs adorned the walls. His mother, wearing his No. 26, was waiting with outstretched arms to give him a big hug.

“You forget how big a deal this is until you come home and see how excited your family is,” Peprah said, adding, “I kind of had to pull myself back a little bit because I’m trying to stay focused on the game itself.”

It was weird, he said, to see the Giants win the Super Bowl the season after they released him, like watching your first love marry someone else. Peprah never imagined that three years later he would be playing in the Super Bowl practically in his hometown.

“You can’t really write it up any better than it’s played out,” he said.

Peprah bought his allotted 15 tickets for the game. His cheering section will include his father, who will travel from Ghana, a couple of relatives from England, his brothers and his mother, wearing her 26 jersey and a foam cheesehead.

Elizabeth Peprah’s radiant smile could have melted the ice on the streets and her voice was jubilant as she talked about the way she and her family overcame the exhausting days and fearful nights that made this joyful week possible.

“I think Charlie takes right after my dad,” she said, adding, “He would have been so proud of him.”
